After being airborne for an hour and a half, there is bound to be something else here not being told. The de-icing generally gets you off the ground in good stead. An hour and a half into the flight would indicate something to me. IMHO

I bet we are being told everything. I'd bet the reporter just didn't understand when they were told and paraphrased incorrectly. We know reporters and airplanes are like oil and water.

Reporter probably told there was a problem with anti ice system. Article actually quotes UA saying mechanical issue.

Reporter must have been a relative of Ashleigh Banfield, the ditzy blonde CNN reporter who gets everything wrong when it comes to aircraft.

10-4, makes since, particularly since it was the daily mail.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. This is too odd and deicing is BS. If you're not properly deiced, you don't take off. 90 minutes in, there should be no ice on the aircraft at all.

That's kinda what sounded fishy to me. If something on the plane ain't working to keep the ice off, that's one thing but it didn't say anything about that. Don't they know we have to have detail. LOL

Unless it was the frost-free compartment on the Flight Deck Refrigerator... not likely.

Bear in mind that the Daily Mail is the UK version of the National Inquirer. I guarantee that there is more to the story, but this is what we get.

Ice sublimates above 250kt. To take off, climb, and cruise for 90 minutes would remove any amount of residual ice left by a bad de-ice job. United is hiding something, landing because of ice is BS. Shame on United for lying.

seems to indicate diversion was to KBOS rather than EGGL. Potayto, Potahto

Yep, i bet this was an anti-ice valve issue or something similar - not DE-icing issue.

If the flight in question diverted due to de-icing, then the Earth is flat! The real reason will soon be uncovered. What makes me mad about this is United's pilot and or their PR arm thinks the public are idiots.
Sounds like something more mundane like an incapacitated crew member.

Well, it may not be either one. It may be the reporter as ChuckMe has stated here below. At any rate, I expect we have heard all about this that we are going to.

ON what planet do you hold before landing to get a better de-ice, they would have burned enough fuel beforehand, unless that was just for traffic.

Sounds like someone doesn't have their story straight!!!! Either there was a malfunction in the ain't I-icing system as stated here or they experienced sever icing that they couldn't get out of and diverted.

Landing elsewhere due to inadequate de-icing on the ground prior to takeoff ,does not make sense. Airplane anti-ice systems failure while airborne maybe.

Sorry I'm late to this discussion but I have a question, and as a former reporter myself, am eager to understand things correctly. What ice does the anti-ice system prevent? An earlier poster said ice sublimates past 250 knots.

Terrorist threat maybe, then a very fishy cover story to keep the masses cowed.

Well, like I said, something not being told. If anti ice was no good, he wouldn't have left in the 1st place, at least I wouldn't have.

As you go through life there are a few things you learn: Reporters are usually incompetent, they never let facts interfere with a story, they paraphrase to the point where the story is completely convoluted.

That is somewhat an over generalization. Similar to " the actions of 99% of lawyers spoils the image of the rest of them"
