McDonnell Douglas FA-18 Hornet (16-8937) - Diverted from NAS Fallon, a trio of VAQ-135 "Black Ravens" E/A-18G Growlers (NAS Whidbey Island) is being marshaled into parking positions right on the Atlantic Aviation taxiway. The Growlers had to taxi directly on to the RNO motor vehicle perimeter road surface in order to be able to turn left and park on Atlantics taxiway. The Atlantic taxiway had to be utilized as a parking ramp when military aircraft from KNFL were diverted to Reno at the same time that numerous Air Tankers involved in fighting many wildfires in California were also diverted to Reno. When the many extra aircraft were added to the number of aircraft already at Atlantic, the regular ramp became completely full; therefore, more aircraft parking positions were improvised by quick-thinking Atlantic management and ground personnel. In this pic, the "Black Ravens" Squadron colorbird, 168937, "Thunder One One," turns toward the motor vehicle perimeter road where it will proceed forward and then turn to be parked next to another "Black Ravens" Growler (168940).

Despite the fact that this photo was taken in the afternoon hours of a cloudless day, the visibility (as is obvious here) was so poor that arriving aircraft had to be on instruments to land here. The wildfire smoke was very thick. It was so thick and heavy over NAS Fallon (east of Reno) that the visibility dropped far below minimums resulting in these Growlers being diverted to RNO. At the same time, the ramp area at Reno Stead Airport (north of Reno), which is normally where Air Tankers are located, became so overcrowded with tankers and other GA aircraft that several tankers also had to be diverted here.

Gary, I can really relate. I just flew into KBOI today, and it looks just like that here, too! Nice job!
