Boeing 737-900 (N75435) - United's N75435, a B739 that wears UA's Continental Airlines "Blue Skyway" special heritage livery, is captured here as it is about 3/4ths of a mile away from Reno-Tahoe International and travelling at climbing speed (roughly 240 knots ... 275 MPH ... or slightly faster) and climbing for 19,000 after being the first commercial jetliner to depart RNO well before dawn. In order for me to get this photo, I climbed Rattlesnake Mountain and positioned at a location on the west side that would put me even with the jet as it was departing to the south. The camera was handheld. I focused on the brightly lit tail and panned as the jet went by. This isn't something that I recommend for other photographers to try. (In fact, I doubt I'll be doing it anymore, either.) The jet is well up in the sky so unless the photographer is in an accompanying aircraft OR on a nearby mountain as I was, it is not possible to get close. Yet the photographer MUST get close to have any hope at all of getting an image. And in absolute darkness, there is nothing to aim at and focus on ... unless there is some portion of the aircraft that is illuminated such as the tail in my photo here. Aiming at a headlight won't work for obvious reasons. And then, after all that work to find a place and set the camera settings appropriately, this is all you end up with. So I don't recommend it ... but the beauty of 21st century digital photography is that if you try some type of impossible shot and it doesn't work, just delete it and either try again or give up. And giving up proves nothing, so ...... (grin).

Hey, Alien .... Here it is. Snapped from the top of The Snake. Came out nice and clear BUT as you can see, there isn't very much to see. lol Still, tho, I'm glad I tried it. I am getting soooooo bored with taking the same old "side view" photos. Not that I have given up taking those, but I have been experimenting with other angles (like sitting on my butt as a jet comes right toward me and lands next to me) or taking pics in fog and in total darkness, etc. Gotta luv digital.
