The unusual positioning of the engines is to boost lift for STOL use by blowing the engine exhaust gases over the wing's upper surface. It's known as the Coandă effect. Boeing copied this concept for a similar aircraft (YC-14) but it was not successful and only 2 prototypes were built.
Wow! Never even heard of AN-74.
That looks a lot sleeker in the air than on the ground. A real workhorse though...

Which is it a 74 or 72?
