Elliptical...Spitfire has got to have the coolest wing profile in all of aviation.... A quick read on the development is very interesting as R. J. Mitchell was chief designer but the little known Canadian Beverley Shenstone was hugely influential in the wing design as well as porting over design and manufacturing techniques from the Germans themselves... There is not a single photo of him with the plane !
In 1929 Shenstone left London and went to work at the Junkers airplane company in Dessau, Germany as a junior aerodynamicist. He developed many ideas from the German aeordynamicist Alexander Martin Lippisch. From the article 'The Spy Behind the plane that saved Britain'.

The Spitfire gained the reputation but the Hawker Hurricane downed far many more enemy aircraft than the Spitfire.
