LATAM Airlines Brazil is the first company to operate the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in the country, reinforcing its operational efficiency strategy. That's because the company focused the Boeing family on long-haul flights; optimized the 777 crew and maintenance staff to operate the 787 with supplementary courses authorized by ANAC.

In all, there are four units of the model from the LATAM Group fleet in Chile that will integrate the Brazilian operation. The arrival of new aircraft also reinforces the strong commitment to the recovery of the airline industry. The aircraft's first international commercial flight is scheduled to take place in the second half of December on the São Paulo/Guarulhos – Madrid route.

“The expansion of our fleet allows us to further increase the company's competitiveness in the sector in a sustainable and efficient manner. We have recently reassumed our leadership in the Brazilian domestic market and are increasingly confident in the resumption of international travel. Our mission is always to offer the best passenger experience”, highlighted Alexandre Peronti, Maintenance Director at LATAM Brazil.

"LATAM has the largest fleet of wide-body aircraft in all of Latin America, made up exclusively of Boeing aircraft, which is why it is one of our most strategic partners in the region and in the industry. With the arrival of the efficient 787 on international routes, we have the opportunity to support your journey of being positioned for an even more sustainable and operationally effective future," said Landon Loomis, vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean and Global Policy and CEO of Boeing Brazil.

Aircraft already in commercial operation

On October 23, the day in which Aviator's Day is also celebrated in Brazil, LATAM carried out the inaugural commercial flight of the aircraft on a domestic route between São Paulo/Guarulhos and Manaus. Take-off took place at 7:55 am and landing at 10:14 am (local time).

After successfully completing several stages of operational assessment, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) approved the company on Wednesday (20) to operate the B787-9 on national and international routes. In addition to the certification flights, LATAM Brazil also carried out the mandatory exercises as part of the validation process required by the regulatory agency.

Aircraft and crew tests were carried out at LATAM's Line Maintenance Center (CML), in Guarulhos, in September, under the supervision of ANAC. In the exercise "Partial Emergency Evacuation Demonstration" (DPEE), the ANAC stipulates a time of 15 seconds for the crew to open 50% of the aircraft doors and their respective slides touch the ground, simulating an emergency evacuation. In the "Demonstration of Landing" (DEA), there is no defined time to complete the exercise, however, the crew must assemble a boat as quickly as possible (using one of the inflated slides in the previous exercise) to simulate an emergency with landing on the Water. In both exercises, the company successfully complied with all requirements.

Operation efficiency

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner adds to the company's operational efficiency strategy on three fronts: fleet, people and sustainability.

The first is related to the concentration in a single family of aircraft - in this case Boeing with the 767, 777 and 787 models - for long-haul international flights.

On the people front, the efficiency of the new model also ensures better use of the company's human resources. As a result of having a unique wide-bodies fleet, LATAM will be able to take advantage of 200 technical crew and 900 Boeing 777 cabin crew to operate the 787-9 Dreamliner. As the models are equivalent, these professionals only needed to carry out a short and specific training to complete the training. And for maintenance, the company already has 60 qualified mechanics for this model.

Finally, in terms of sustainability, the advanced technology of the 787-9 Dreamliner reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 25%, in addition to providing a 50% reduction in the noise pattern.
