(Funny) Single-engine plane makes hard landing in Florida neighborhood

eklendi

His Cirrus SR20 plane hit some mailboxes, small trees and a fence. No one was injured in the landing. "He said, 'We land here all the time ... this is Pilot Country.' And I'm like, 'No. It's not. This is a horse community and you got them mixed up,'" Torro recalls. (www.wtsp.com) Daha Fazlası...

Normally we do not line the runway with mailboxes.....LOL! glad nothing but pride was hurt here. I think you shouldnt be allowed to used a GPS til you have 250 hours PIC

I have about 100 hours, and the airplane I flew doesn't even have a GPS. I do have to wonder why any primary student pilot would be allowed to use a GPS; it's literally training them to be overreliant on one navigational instrument. Besides, the VOR's and ADF's really are not exactly all that difficult to use in the first place. I think a GPS could make a valuable supplementary tool, and if I ever get my own aircraft, I'll consider investing in one, but it's not a substitute for the pilot!

i agree a million percent. we had kln-90's when i was earning my private and it was always turned off. we are training a generation of computer programmers that will have no idea how to get home if the lights go out. i don't care how advanced cockpits become every pilot should be trained with a sectional, an e6b, and dead reckoning flying is too serious of a business to not be a master of all aspects of flying and navigation.

Here is a Google Map that shows the road he landed on (marked as "A"). You can see the runway to the west of it.

By looking at the road compared to the runway I don't see how he could have gotten the mixed up.

What an idiot! How did he ever get a license, that's what I say. Now I could may be understand if he was flying in low fog. But come on, I don't think GPS could have messed you up, and have been off by 3 miles. I think somethine else is the culprit here (Drugs?). aha. FUNNY!!

He has a student pilot's license, which is to learn how to fly an aircraft. He did not have a private pilot's license. So in otherwords, he got his pilot's license by walking into the Doctor's Office and getting a medical exam; then the Flight Instructor signed off saying that he thought that he could safely operate the aircraft on his own, and for a flight of that distance, would generally have had to have signed off on that particular flight as well.

This is what happens when you teach to follow the magenta line, and don't teach it well.

the road is over a mile away this guy needs dead reckoning experience and needs to learn what a runway looks like.

Fortunately he didn't try to land a Citation on Cirrus Rd.

If he'd tried to do that he probably would have flown over the road before he even touched down :)

Mistaking one airport for another has been done a bunch. Mistaking a road lined with mailboxes for an airport is a stretch. Must be relative of Patrick Swayze.

What the heck is a student pilot flying an SR-20 for anyhoo?????

Update from last post. Looks like the airport is in a high end fly-inn community. Therefore, he must have some bucks. That could be why he was signed off to fly such a high performance plane so early in his career.

SR20 is a 200hp fixed gear airplane, so that's 10% more horsepower than a Cessna 172S.

But a higher performance wing that can be squirrely for the new pilot. I guess if that is how he learned it would be ok.

He's a student at Aerosim Flight Academy in Sanford. Apparently a Chinese national, which means that he's likely there on a Chinese airline's dime.

Not buying the 'GPS' argument (pilot said the GPS indicated he was at Pilot Country) what about looking for runway markings?

I know, It's just another case of trusting the instruments a little too much when you're not in IFR conditions.

Don't fly on a Chinese Airline. Never know where you might land.

Isn't a Chinese company buying Cirrus? If so, they must be sending us all their dummies for retraining.

I feel bad for the guy... This is where the human element comes in to play when operating an airplane... You actually have to look out the windscreen if you plan on flying VFR.
aircmdr
now there is something unique ...looking out the window ... I have landed on many, many runways, but never saw any with mailboxes along the edge.

Why the H E L L are we training foreigners here?...let them train in their own country. This is how 911 happened......
ibock
Ian Bock 0
Yeah, it's not like our economy is bad, and we could use the foreign investment! Kick out all the people that want to spend money here!

This is NOT how 9/11 happened. How DARE you attempt to use the name of 3000 dead Americans in your feeble-brained version of xenophobia!

Years ago when I was learning to fly, they had a flight school down the street that trained foreign pilots exclusively (about 90% from Japan). I talked with one of the instructors there, and he said it was three to five times more expensive to learn in their home country than it was to come to the US and learn....room and board included. The CFIs made some pretty good bucks if they could tolerate the broken English.

And, no, Jerry, this is not how 9/11 happened. There are plenty of wackos anywhere in the world with a terrorist agenda against Americans, including here in the US of A. I don't recall seeing any job requirements saying they must be foreign-born.

Sounds like there's been attempts to land here before this one. I can think of a very simple fix of painting a big "X" at either end of the street.

Yup, an "X" on each end of the road ought to do the trick

Which is, incidentally, the reason primary students *ought* to be trained in GPS. They just can't rely on it as their sole means of navigation.

Forget about the Gps as a reason to land, The Mark 10 Eyeball should be able to determine that mail boxes are NOT runway lights.
Flmoose

Original reports that the pilot was just a student are incorrect. He actually has had his Private certificate for about 5 months.
What baffles me is that he relied solely on his GPS for navigation. It's just further proof that today's pilots are relying too much on technology rather than flying skill.
Here are some pictures I took showing the damage to the Cirrus.
