Regional carrier Skywest, along with its subsidiary ExpressJet, have lost 30 cities that were under RFP renewals. Additionally, ExpressJet will be losing another eight cities as United combines services at airports that were served by ExpressJet under a Continental CPA agreement and also had United mainline service.... Unfortunate headline.

The cities affected by this move will still have SkyWest or ExpressJet planes flying for United, it is only the ground handling that United is changing.

What we need is that the Major carriers like United, Delta, US Airways, and American to re-take routes that were originally flown by the majors from the regional carriers

It's a fight for a larger piece of the pie - air routes.
With approx 70,000 flights per day now ---it's no wonder
UAL does not want to loose control across the nation's grid.

so this means that united will begin to control regional routes?

Not this - but most of the Express routes are "capacity purchase", so United writes the schedule (like Fedex Feeder). These routes may switch between regionals from schedule to schedule. The contracts for numbers of airplanes and rates are renegotiated every so often, but the schedule is up to United. A few of the routes are "pro-rate", which are operated by a single regional on its own accord.

Ground handling contracts are negotiated separately.
