FAA To Close 238 Air Traffic Control Towers, Including 20 In Florida; See List

The FAA has released the list of ATC control towers they plan to close as part of the steps it is taking due to the federal government sequestration. Of the 238 towers that will close on April 7... (www.thefloridanewsjournal.com) Daha Fazlası...

Most of them shouldn't have been open in the first place. It's not a safety issue, just a pride and political one. The tower at PVW was closed when Reagan fired the controllers, and has never been missed. One on the list is KHOB. I've been by that airport many times and flown into it a few, and have never seen traffic levels that justified a tower. If the cities want a tower, they can pay for one.

I was at PVW when it closed. The FAA spent some $ later in the 80s refurbishing it with plans of reopening, but never did.

Very interesting that as a direct slap at general aviation they picked "our" airports at Fredrick, MD, and Oshkosh, WI. Those support, respectively, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Interesting comment! That tower at Oshgosh is for one week a year, the busiest tower in the U.S.A.....Can't say the same for a bunch of others , however. KPWK comes to mind.

Are you from Chicago area or just fly to there? Have you ever been to c56 out south? It is awesome. My brother lives there. It is probably the most georgeous GA terminal I have ever seen. Is owned by Jim Bult privately but open to the public.

Who are they kidding? Budget constraints? With almost one Billion more to spend this year over last year?

Orlando Executive about 250,000 movements per year with overlapping airspace with MCO.
Page Field about 75,000 movements per year overlapping with RSW
Opa-Locka Executive with around 150,000 movements per year overlapping with MIA.
FAA budget: $500 million for consultants and $200 Million for travel.

What could go wrong?

Nick Stoker 1
I'm a comm. student at ORL and am a bit worried about the closure. I can deal with it of course, but the other day I was landing at Executive and was the 4th to land and there were 5 waiting to take off. There's no way that will go cleanly if they do close us and we're left to manage that ourselves...

Well, as it stands, they need to get away from the meat ax approach and put a scalpel in hand and I really think that this list, along with cuts by other agencies, are works in progress. You notice that they are now going to allow the cities/airports to try and justify their towers. There will undoubtedly be some exceptions and it is situations just as yours that need to be strongly looked at. However it goes, it will take some getting used to as some have grown up with nothing but towers and have never flown much in uncontrolled airspace. That will be one item that will have to be stressed harder in training, regardless of who you are.

Cut the 500 mil for consultants, cut travel expenses by 125 mil, and still close the towers. You can't get in and out of the airports in busy airspace without talking to app/dep anyhow unless you virtually tree top it. Just have to be able to taxi without running into each other. Lol

You know, it is really strange how things have changed in a lifetime though. It used to be, prior to the junk bond craze of the eary 80's, that there was a fair sense of security on jobs and at companies. Dad worked at the mill and he brought his son on and so it went. 2 and 3 generations on the floor at the same company. Corporations making money, having a group of companies feeding off each other and all making money. Then the junk bonds and all the get rich quick schemes came along and nothing is sacred. CEO's are obligated to the stockholders at the expense of the working class and so it goes. We all rail about it but it is just a sign of the times

All the personal flights and flight schools out of North Perry and Boca Raton and all the substantial corporate jet and cargo flights out of Opa Locka (all inside the Miami Center) will have to shut down as the Center is not going to allow "uncontrolled VFR" departures or arrivals so close to Miami Int. and Ft. Lauderdale Int. which combined log thousands of operations a day. This is utter nonsense, it can not last.
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 1
You don't need a tower to depart IFR. You get your clearance from departure. Done at airports all over the country. Will it slow the system down? Probably. You also get a clearance to depart VFR. That is also done routinely.

I see it as the opposite. The Republicans, especially on the far right (Tea Party ) want government to fail, and therefore are trying to starve it of funding, ala' Grover Norquist. When essential services fail, such as ATC, they will part out the whole thing including radar ops, on the theory that private industry does it better and cheaper. Plus, there is more money for their corporate campaign donors. This gridlock will continue until the voters reduce their power to nothing, or they win and Libertarianism takes over. Call me paranoid, but.....

My understanding from other news reports I heard is that this list includes towers which operations would be curtailed, but not cut completely. Closing the tower at North Perry (HWO) will probably result in a midair or runway accident. In 40+ years of flying I have never encountered a more confusing "small airport" based on parallel N/S and E/W runways, which include 01 Left and Right, and 10 Left and Right. Add in the very active banner towning pickup and drop zone in the NW corner of the airport, which requires banner towing aircraft to fly a different pattern than everyone else, and you have a mixture that WILL result in an accident. This tower should not be closed.

As a Retired FAA/USAF Air Traffic Control Manager I feel that this will put a slight more workload on the flying public. I've worked traffic from LRF,LIT,FFO,IAD,Okinawa (Kadana AFB)CRW,HKS and JAN. Pilots will feel the lack of assistance from level 1 VFR towers however the bulk of the work comes from the Approach Control Facilities. IFR flights will feel no little if any effect. I would say prior to taxi file for VFR Flight Following with Center if leaving the Approach airspace. These closures have been planed for many years and should be of no surprise. Most remained open for political reasons. Press On! You Guys (Pilots) will be OK!

KennyFlys

I see several in Texas that are simply too slow to ever justify a tower. They opened San Marcos only a year ago. If anything, have a temporary controller if it proves to be a much busier reliever airport to Austin-Bergstrom. I never saw a need at Georgetown or New Bruanfels.

Most of the airports mentioned around Dallas have never been that busy when I've been there. So, I'd have to say there is a lot of overspending in these areas.

And, closing these towers is not going to hurt aviation. Idiot, unsafe pilots hurt aviation, especially general aviation. So, pick your topics wisely to cry about.
vettdvr
James Corkern 1
Guess we really don't need aviation after all. Lets do like Europe and tax General aviation out of existance and force rail service. We dont' mind waiting 2 weeks for an over night package and when someone is ill in your family they can wait 5 to 7 days for you to arrive. Who needs aircraft anyway. After all 100 yrs ago they did fine without them. BTW put the cell phones with the planes when the planes go,, we can go back to telegraph.
MikeMohle
Mike Mohle 1
The average person thinks every airport has a tower, and the Administration will start the scare tactics about less air safety and the lack of towers due to mythical cuts!!!! The cost of all of the Obama vacations (2 of everything, traveling separately from his wife) would pay for all of this and more.
tyketto
Seeing that the POTUS has taken less than 1/4th of the vacations our previous POTUS has taken from first taking office to leaving office, this argument carries no weight. And where were the cuts to those when he was in office?

Pot. Kettle. Black.

either way, again, this was posted at least 2 weeks ago, and there are more than enough comments in those squawks, such as the towers facing closure can show proof that their closure would not be in the nation's best interest, and they could stay open. SMO and HHR are on that list, and those are used for transiting the LAX Class B over the airport. If you think those or any other airport that is next to, under, or adjacent to major airspace that eases congestion near a major airport is going to close, then there is a lot of naivety going on.
MikeMohle
Mike Mohle 2
There are no cuts! Cutting half of the budgeted growth in not a cut. There are many other areas of waste, but this administration has decided to go this route to close towers instead because they are more visible. Must be the hate for all of those "millionaires and billionaires" in their private jets (but failing to mention that 90%+ of all GA aircraft using these airports are piston aircraft operated for business, not jets).

You are wrong about the vacation thing....Bush even gave up golf when troops were deployed. Last year the taxpayer coughed up an estimated $1.4 Billion to support Hussein and his consort including $250,000 for three calligraphers, $100,000 plus for a dog walker and groomer for Bo who, like Mooch, flies separately and huge amounts to support the golf game. These numbers don't include the cost of sending one of the daughters to Mexico with 24 Secret Service guards for spring break or the cost of hookers for the trip to Colombia (at least they had good taste).

Great, while Bush gave up golf he also at the same time cut the tax rate of his fellow millonaires, and then he embarked on an illegal, immoral and totally unjustified invasion of Iraq costing so far 3 trillion and counting. Let's stick to the facts. 50 percent of all mid-airs occur within 5 miles of an airport. Fact. Of those mid-airs, 30 percent happen on final approach. Fact. I work at a soon to be closed tower in southern California. In 48 years of continuous operation, this airport has NEVER had a mid-air. The uncontrolled airport 8 miles away has had 4 fatals in a dozen years, with one fatality on the ground due to falling debris. Some pilots are trying to do the right thing, the rest are students or idiots. I've seen it, and can't imagine how safety is going to be maintained. Traffic is rising, a new flight school is opening and we handle a lot of foreign language students. Good Luck.
conortodd
conortodd 0
You've got some selection bias going on there, Mr. Smith. It's likely that people who don't fly often enough, but insist on flying occasionally, avoid controlled fields entirely, and therefore only pose a hazard to uncontrolled fields. Therefore, you're not likely to see accidents due to these people (who probably don't know what they're doing or should be doing) at your field. The only relationship between those accidents and whether or not the field is uncontrolled, therefore, would be that the out-of-practice fair-weather flyer would not fly at a controlled field.
The accident statistics bear out this line of reasoning: most GA accidents occur in nice weather during daytime at un-controlled fields.

Not only will this clear the skies for Drones, it will backfire, when storms

Get ready for major LAWSUITS, when accidents happen, and if this is what this
Administration calls "protecting the people of the U.S.A." then they need to
re-think the oath they took, to ensure "life, Liberty and the persuit of Happiness"

Best thing we can do, is demand that they STOP fiddling around with issues like
Immigrations, and focus on the REAL needs of this Country....JOBS, in order to broaden
the tax base, for the WILD DEBT both these parties have caused the Taxpayers.

Could it be, that the Airlines are losing revenue, and they lobbied, for them to
close the smaller Control towers to force those who fly "Private" to return to Commercial?

an Air India, struck a Jet Blue on the taxiway, and everyone is supposed to control themselves? What a joke, for those who think that a Runway, is like a 4-Way stop, and as long as everyone stops, and lets the guy on the right proceed, they'll be safe? Dreamers:

I don't think a few aircraft would make it dangerous without a tower, if everyone does what they're supposed to do. But like everything else, that may not happen.
I don't know how it is now, but years ago, the 90's, MMU had about 3 flight schools presenting a large mix of light aircraft and heavy jet activity operating just fine when the tower was closed. I do remember going into OMN back in the early 2000's, rolling through the intersection after landing and a guy taking off on the cross runway chastising me for not holding short of his departure runway. Never mind I was landing on 4000 ft., and the first call he made was to yell at me. I found out later that he was a repeat offender. It takes all kinds...

I'm afraid I got to disagree there. All these agency heads and cabinet members that are doing the cutting work for OBAMA and he is directing that chorus, only now seeing that the congress is not going to budge, and starting to throw out some olive branches this week, to start talking. He has known this day was coming for a long time and it has been another big game of chicken, except this time, Congress didn't blink.

It's amazing how everyone says their Congressmen are dong great. It's always the ones. Guess what? If this was true then we wouldn't be having the problems we are.

I can state without hesitation that my congress idiot is doing a lousy job.

It will be interesting. He wants to be King but that is why there are 3 branches of government, each to hold the other in check.
