I was impressed that ALPA was taking the lead on an important issue.

Don't blame foreign countries for not interferring with the success of their aviation companies. At core in the US the typical fare includes about 29% or so of taxes and gov't fees compared to 0% for the Middle East Emirates.

29% pays for a lot of service.

In addition the US taxpayer subsidizes the cost of foreign airlines acquiring Boeing planes through the US Export bank. What good or the goose I good for the gander. So the same loan guarantees should be made available to US airlines to level the playing field. Alternatively the guarantees could be ended outright worldwide through negotiation, but these do help Boeing maintain production and good jobs.

But instead of focusing on the core issue, ALPA pushes a mixed bag of the worst policies from their wish list of anti-competitive policies.

So disappointing.

Unions in America are apparently part of the problem that are making US airlines less competitive. (It's time to look inward rather tha out.)

If US carriers had the same level of onboard service and not charge extra for it - they'd be competing.

On the same route, the US and ME carrier have the same government imposed taxes and fees. To/from the US, Emirates will pay all the same PFC, 9/11 fee, customs fee, excise tax, segment tax, etc that United does. Same when flying to/from LHR, Emirates pays the same APD and other taxes/fees BA does.

Thanks for the clarification.

There are many more taxes beyond those applied to fares directly. US airline corporations pay even more taxes to their government, that Middle East airlines don't have to pay to their own governments.

Let's not forget that Emirates also pays their start-up pilots better rates than US carriers.

They don't have a large base of private and general aviation pilots to draw from. If they want to steal trained pilots away from first world airlines to go work out of a base in 120 degree desert, then they've got to entice them with at least a few bucks to make it worth their while.

If it weren't for unions protecting the pay of pilots at the upper end of the pay scale, at the expense of new hires, there wouldn't be such a vast difference in pay between starter pilots and experienced pilots.

We would do a lot to improve safety of US aviation if we paid the pilots at the beginning of their careers enough to be able to live without worrying constantly about paying their bills and without pressure to work very long days.

As the son of a union carpenter, please don't bring unions into this. Union jobs in the US provide living wages: something hard to find these days.

Unions are a total waste and do not belong in today's employment world. They servered their purpose when they were created, but that time has LONG since gone away.
