Air India pilots suspended for handing control of plane for 40 minutes to Stewardesses

Two Air India pilots put the lives of 166 passengers on a Bangkok-Delhi flight in danger by taking a 40-minute break from the cockpit and getting two stewardesses to operate the plane in their absence. Their stunt almost ended in disaster after one of the stewardesses accidentally turned off the auto-pilot, forcing the pilots to rush back to their seats. That reminds me a good number of years ago, a fellow work mate went to pickup a 727 to bring it down to the gate. It was before TSA, so he took his girlfriend up and let her ride in the FO's seat. While taxing down, he told her she could drive using the yolk... To this day, she thinks she really taxied the plane.... And before anyone asks.. Yes she was Blonde... And it showed :)

That is a big no no... A number of years back a Russian Aeroflot Airbus 310, capt let his son handle the controls and caused a crash with all lives lost.

Dragging both pilots añlong the main throughfares of Dehli or Bombay in broad daylight and then drump whatever if left of them in the nearest garbage pit would not be enough. Never will fly Air India again.

Shouldn't F/As have some knowledge of how to fly an airplane if they are allowed to sit so close to the controls? They might as well have asked for a private pilot if they needed a break.

Well if management didn't give themselves big raises, and paid the pilots more, this wouldn't happen. More importantly these were hot Flight Attendants!!!

The age old principle aloft seems to have been observed here: the stews came to the cockpit and asked them pilots coffee, tea or me............ and then something happened (LIMAO!!!!).

Well, did the officers order the air-hostesses to take their positions? If so, I guess the defence "we were only following orders" isn't valid in the air.

I'd have thought Cpt Soni would have judged it a good idea to include in his instructions Don't flip that switch, it turns off the autopilot. But then, there are other reasons to question his judgement, I suppose. Although I wasn't there, who am I to judge?
