Planning to fly southwest to Hawaii’s soon. Well it will have to wait as Southwest has had to put the services on ice due to the government shutdown. (skift.com) More...

This is a terribly misleading headline. While it may not be obvious to everyone, many in the aviation industry knew that there would be no additional activity towards this route with the government shutdown and a lack of ETOPS approval from the FAA.

Southwest has NOT "put their Hawaii service [plans] on ice." This is completely and utterly false.

As Kris accurately states, this has nothing to do with Southwest. A more accurate headline would be "Government Shutdown Ices Southwests Hawaii Service".

What do you mean it has nothing to do with southwest. Southwest can’t fly the route or get the etops for them due to the government shutdown. It has everything to do with them and the government. And two they didn’t say they were canceling them just putting them on ice untill they can get approval.

Idiom "Put something on ice:" (Fig.) to postpone acting on someone or something.

Your statement says that Southwest has "put their [plans] [o]n ice."

Southwest has not postponed acting on something. They have no actions to perform. The actions that are delayed are those of the FAA and by the FAA as a result of the government shutdown. Your headline suggests Southwest has purposefully delayed seeking their ETOPS certification, which is FALSE. Southwest is not a government agency and is operating normally in all other respects.

Here's some bathroom reading for you. Might I suggest Chapter 5.

possibly the writer should have said WN has Hawaii service in a "holding pattern" because of the government shutdown, and there would be no discussion on this short article..many have known for a while that WN was planning its expansion to Hawaii pending approval, and this just happens to be in the time frame that the FAA is not fully functioning...
