I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would want to use LGA as a hub. It's an awful airport.

They are using the US Air terminal and investing 100 million in improvements to the facility.

Agreed with Donald. Can land and be have a martini in my hand at the Monkey Bar in 29 minutes. This is VERY important to me.

Glad to see the large increase in jet service to/from KBUF. USAirways current half jet/half prop service is a hot mess, especially in winter.

non-stop flights from CLT-LGA. great way to get more flights into charlotte

Looks like they plan on ding a little tail kickin' in the Carolinas, not only CLT, but GSO and RDU as well. Look out US Air.

It seems like CLT is a minor hub for delta already because there are at least 25+ flights a day for delta

They have had a prescence in NC for years out of ATL and that has been increased with the NWA merger, out of both ATL amd MEM. RDU has been a jumping off point for International flights for years. They have about as big a prescence at GSO as US Air if not bigger. I notice that while not out of LGA, they are starting or beefing up GSO out of JFK and I think that over the years that GSO may become kind of a mini hub for them as opposed to RDU. SWA has been into RDU for years and rates have been bad depressed over there, in and out. Only thing with SWA into RDU is that you could only hit it from Midway in Chicago. They did not have anything out of the South. Since they opened up SC, I don't know if that has been changed or not.

I'd much rather fly to DTW than LGA. Much friendlier and efficient.

If LGA is to be a to/from NYC airport, then it really needs to be on or connected to one of the train lines, like JFK. If LGA is to be a thru-hub, then I'll avoid that almost guaranteed delay at LGA and go thru some other airline or other airport.

I agree with ya, but I'll be deep in the ground before that happens. They're still futzing around with the 2nd ave subway, and thats been going on for 40 years!

They can hub and remodel all they want to, but like you say, until the delays and
in town/cross town connections improve, I can't see that they will gain that much.
conmanflyer

if you think about it, this way LGA may be more efficient because the more flights a single airline operates, the more likely they are to space their arrivals/departures out a little bit

Since LGA is slot restricted, there is no change in the scheduled arrival or departure times.

LGA will unfortunately probably never have a good transit link. However, you can take the M60 buss to the Astoria-Ditmars subway station and get to midtown in less than 45 minutes - not too bad compared to JFK.

LGA usually has fewer delays than JFK and EWR, although all 3 are some of the worst in the country in terms of delays.

Hopefully they will gain some efficiecy. DAL is much better at OT than USAir so that may help some but between the 3 airports plus all the private fields, that is the most congested airspace in the world up there. Even though an Airline may kick one from the gate OT, somtimes ATC will hold them for a slot. Their system ain't perfect either and it will go even further in the tank if an Airline is late getting one out in a projected slot. That Airspace has to be divided and there generally ain't no room to pass on a taxiway, so a minor problem will back everything up. My sympathy is with the pilots that have to go in and out of that mess every day. I've been there in big iron but didn't have to like it.

Even though with LGA being closer to Manhattan still why would DAL want a hub at LGA? To me it's more like them hogging up the USAir terminal more than flying around LGA. It's great for an airline to have 100 new flights and 29 new destinations but still come on LGA? Let me tell you something LGA is usually ran by CRJs Dash 8s and mostly some airliners here and there to me DAL opened that hub as a Regional hub more like it.

Good move for Delta, if this works, Delta could control all of NYC air travel. Even though EWR, from my experience, is the easiest airport to go through, looking on Google maps it is very inconvenient to get to. No subway service, expensive taxi service, painful drive across the Hudson..except there is Amtrak to EWR leaving from Penn station via the NY subway. Unless you re in Newark, UA would be inconvenient to take. If you fly international, JFK is easier to access from Manhattan than EWR. Looks like DL will control most of the market here, may affect UA at EWR.

Would it be possible to fly from LGA to CA or are the runways to short to allow for adequate performance?

For the big 3 NY airports, EWR and JFK are probably tied for ease-of-access from Manhattan, with both accessible via commuter rail lines out of Penn which provide cross-platform connections to each airports train line. LGA has no such access at present, so if you are taking mass transit you are stuck with a subway-to-bus connection in Queens or taking a direct airport bus. Or, if you are a local you've no doubt figured out the value of Sunnyside Cab Service from the 7 train ;)

To be clear, none of the NYC airports are easy to get to, and a delayed train on either the LIRR or NJ Transit will throughly screw up your travel plans and timing to either EWR and JFK.

Then there's the weather...and its been my experience that even on bright, clear, sunny but windy days, EWR is usually beset with delays due to its lack of a viable high-traffic crosswind runway. LGA and JFK usually have no such issues.

I'm a thinking in their release, they said they would be offering it

I see what you are talking about though. With only 7 grand on either runway, I wonder what they would offer it on.

Yes looks a little tight, the A/C will probably be a319s, or 737-700s may be able to pull it off.

but, they could do like SWA does and change same aircraft through ATL or somthing. and use a light 767 or 757?

Ben Deneweth 0
Due to the LGA perimeter rule, flights over 1500 sm are not allowed except on Saturdays and to Denver (which was grandfathered in since LGA-DEN flights existed before the rule).

After the slot swap, DL will still control fewer than half the slots at LGA.

Yes, many airlines offer through aircraft routings on LGA-California routes that stop in places like ATL, ORD, DTW, etc. That is nothing new.

DL isn't adding any new service to their existing hubs as part of this slot swap.

In reality, having a "through fligjt/aircraft" on a domestic flight doesn't really make much of a difference to the customer when it actually comes time to book.

EWR does have Airtrain - public transit access to Manhattan is only slightly more complex than JFK.

Interesting. Thank you for the site that clears it up. That Q path looks pretty convenient to access the south island. EWR is very convenient if you live in NJ, if you live in NJ there is no point going to LGA or JFK. This is off topic but I thought northeast lines from Amtrak were served out of Grand Central..

If/when they ever complete the tunnel btwn Grand Central and Penn, then it will be, but for the forseeable future Penn and New Rochelle are the only NY state stations on the high-speed NEC.

This will pressure JetBlue to increase service in Boston and possibly build another hub on the East Coast.
drdisque

I fail to see how it does that at all. This isn't the mid 90's. Airlines are not in the mood to expand willy-nilly anymore just for competitive reasons.

You know, after having it for years, during their own bankruptcy a few years back, DAL closed their DFW hub which they had there since about day 1 of DFW or shortly thereafter, and now, after the NWA merger, they are still changing their minds daily about what to do with MEM. By closing DFW, being undecided about MEM(as far as the public goes) and now opening this LGA thing and commiting resources up there, it is as they are abandoning the lower midwest and positioning themselves to become an EAST/WEST coast carrier, with ORD in the middle. When they pulled out of DFW, Eagle was finally able to move out of that damnable A terminal and take over and do well with quite a few of the lanes. It will all be interesting to see what happens in the future. Somebody knows but they are keeping it very quiet.

DAL has trimmed 20 - 30% of their regional flights that were at MEM. To me it seems the same way you explained it. DL basically wants MEM/ORD/ hubs to all connect to all their other hubs for example DL wants usually all DL traffic as possible to be on a MEM - ATL route while the regional jets just go to small town USA. But I would say 10% of those DL flights heads for JFK or DCA. Seems to me that DAL just makes hubs and only put there other hubs as routes like how I just said it MEM - ATL. That's one reason why the flights to Atlanta have the highest passenger volume that comes through MEM.

They must smell blood in the water w/AA troubles. But w/the most expensive jet fuel in the country, complicated and inflexible airways. A well-placed thunderstorm or snowstorm and their nationwide schedule is toast! Dont look for too many sales thru NYC on DL.
drdisque
Ben Deneweth 0
DL and US have had this slot swap in the works for almost 2 years. This is not a new response to AA's recent troubles. Of course AA does have an issue in NYC (which DL also has, now to a lesser extent) in that their presence in New York is split between JFK and LGA which prevents them from doing much in the way of international connections. CO/UA's consolidated operation at EWR is a lot more efficient.

Airlines do not consider how delay prone an airport is when determining what "deals" are available.
delmonaco03
I live in line with the runway at BGR and whenever there is a storm over NYC it looks like a used aircraft lot with international flights stopping to clear customs and wait until whatever the problem is in New York passes.

Well, what you aren't figuring there is the US flights that are going away. I think that is a tit for tat slot swap and no increase

FedX cargo - thanks for working with the communities here at ORD with fly quiet.
No turns below 4,000 and stay above 3,000 on take offs.

Consistently in the "Worst 10 Airports" and deservedly so. Prime for congestion. weather, complicated runways, restrictions and patterns, delays that are more often than not expected? Terminal renovations, much needed, may help that part but what else changes other than adding 100 new flights to an already problematic situation?
drdisque
Ben Deneweth 0
Again, read the article and the post two above yours - There is NO net addition of flights through this slot swap. There will be the same number of flights leaving at the same times as before. The airline operating them and the destinations is all that is changing.
