Meet The Boeing Family of Wide Body Jetliners

787: She is drop-dead gorgeous, she has all the "right" friends, and all the boys want to date her. 767: He isn't terribly smart, or good-looking, or popular, or talented. 777: He's the family overachiever. 747: Quiet and studious, she tends to keep to herself. This was the famous event where Tex Johnston rolled the prototype 707. When he got back on the ground, the President and CEO of Boeing said never never do that again. The companies fortune is riding on this plane.

The story goes on that when the Boeing CEO turned to his assistant after watching Tex to the barrel roll and told him to tell Tex to never do that again, the assistant replied: "OK but he just sold our airplane."

Tex Johnston. Seattle Boat Fair, 1955, one left, one right at about 1000 feet.

The FAA overlooked it as did company execs mainly beecause they were the ones that asked him to do it.

JUST A OFF SIDE NOTE, THE MOST beautiful jet passenger airliner EVER is the VICKERS VC-10. absolutely elegent, lady like, senous, downright sexy.as for props, the same can be said for the LOCKHEED SUPER "G" CONSTELLATION.
dbrooks84
David Brooks 1
I too think that the VC-10 is graceful and a beauty. I the IL-62 is a take off but typical of Russian designs - not ellegant.

I personally disagree with the analogy on the 767. While big brother 777 has kinda taken over, he would not be there less 67 hadn't came along first.lol

Let's try this again, lol. The triple 7 was conceived as a trijet concept to competer with the DC-10 and L1011 back in 1978. At the same time, the 767 was produced to compete with the A300 from Airbus. There was a 767-X concept that came out in the 1980's to once again compete with the MD with their new MD-11 and Airbus with their A330 and 340. However, many airlines disliked what Boeing did with the 767-X (basically an enlarged 767); therefore, Boeing scraped the whole design and realized they had to come up with something totally brand-new. In the late 1980's, they came up with the 777 design, which was a new design from the ground-up. In the end, the 777 came out of airlines demands for something completely different from what Boeing had done before.

Regardles of conception and thinking in which you are probably correct, first flight of the 767 was 9/26/81, with first delivery to United on 9/8/82. first flight for 777 was not until 6/12/94, with first delivery again to United on 6/7/95

And United partnered with Boeing in the whole 777 development;)

I'll buy that but that was almost a 13 year spread in there.lol. My Ex employer just bought a brand new 767-200ER last year. I carried a 757 ticket and they were dual type, requiring only a short transition, which they allowed me to make. A beautiful bird but not quite set up like your typical airliner.lol

A new 767-200ER? I though the last new 767-200ERs were for Contentinal back about 10 years ago. Just curious, whho owns this new 767-200ER?

Well, here's what Wiki says;"As of November 2011, the 767 has received 1,057 orders from 71 customers, of which 1,013 have been delivered; 837 of these aircraft were in service in July 2011"; that looks like 44 open orders as of this last November. As far as the company name David, I can tell you the plane is based at KFSM along with 2-3 smaller ones and the company is located about halfway between there and KXNA; has been there over 40 years. Cannot divulge the mae. Sorry.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Cannot divulge the Name, sorry, and by your own post above, you make the comment they are still being ordered.lol
dbrooks84
David Brooks 1
Interesting Wayne. I checked the Boeing's orders for the past three years, there were no 767-200 on order. Either an older order or a -300 order was changed to -200 model. When we can no the name, would appreciate knowing.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well, it won't be on the order books. They took delivery last summer, and as I said, for security reasons, can't divulge the name. Told you more than I should have. All I can tell you is that it was ne. Guy that took my place up there and gave me my transiion ride went to WA and took delivery of it.And I ask again, what about your own comment above. You contradicted yourself.lol

Hey guys,

Just FYI, we're looking into what's causing comments to be submitted by error. I'll have a fix for you shortly.

David, if you click anywhere in the text field, say to move the cursor back to correct a typo, it will post. Nerve-racking, but Ive since learned to either live with the typo or use Backspace or arrow keys to go back and correct errors. Just in case you needed to know.

Hey Chris,

You'll notice we fixed that since yesterday. I agree it was really annoying, I can't believe we didn't notice it before. Let me know if you have anything else.

AND, if you type your comment and then hit POST MY COMMENT, it seemingly does not move, yet it will go ahead and post your comment below where you can't see it and as many times as you hit your mouse.

I've fixed the issue the double commenting, you'll see it on the website Monday at 4pm CST. Regarding the other things you point out, we're aware of them and working on it

The 767, as described in the article, I too disagree with them. The 767 has been a work horse for many airlines. Back in the early 1980s, the market was looking at a variety of issues. One was size and economics (2 crew members versus 3 on most of the "heavies" at that time (DC-10, L1011, A300, B707, DC-8).

Just look at the numbers of 767s still with the majors. AA - 73, UA - 59, DL - 97

767s are still being ordered (not counting military). ANA and JAL ordered due to late delivery of 787s. 42 767s were ordered last year alone. Clearly the 787 will overtake the 767s but it will take years.

As someone mentioned, the 757 and 767 allowed pilots to fly either type. I know one DL pilot who recently went to LAX on a 757 and came back flying a 767.
preacher1
preacher1 1
They do carry a dual type rating, but it does reguire a brief check ride in the 67 to make the transition. The guy I trained to take my place is the one wo gave me mine, BUT I can tell you it also depends on how far behind on upgrades your 57 was too. lol.

Damned computers, I sneezed in the middle of typing, and looked what happened above.
We can brag about all the fat boys in the family, but the skinny ones have carried the day. Had the 737 not come along, Boeing would not have had the capital to design and build the 757, 767, 777, and the 787.

THEY MUST HAVE FEMALE NAMES. why, they are long an smooth, curvey, nice back ends, pleasing facial features, tempermental when smooth sailing. they like to flert their wares and insist on the best airports and parking areas.like to be pampered and be kept warm at night.

RobSJC
Military pilots, tend to place female names on their aircraft, So does that mean they are all female and not male ? lol .... Such as The Enola Gay ... named after Enola Gay Tibbets, mother of the pilot, Brigadier General Paul Tibbets, US Army Air Corps .. predcessor of the US Air Force

First of all, all airliners are 'she.' Secondly, the 767 portrayal is wrong. She is not socially awkward. She flies like a dream, is a work horse and also extremely reliable. I've flown her for six years and loved every minute. She's a beautiful machine.

My point is that we would talking about the weather instead of Boeing wide bodies, if the B737cashcow had not been there to finance the company's efforts. Just a little respect for the guppy.

I think it is something new they started Alistair, again without telling anyone. You make a comment and it comes on the screen before you leave it, like it used to do, and you hit it again and it posts again. Also, it looks like fresh comments are coming in at the top. I Emailed FA support a few ago. It is not on all stories yet, just on the ones that have PERMALINK beside the word COMMENT

Al, The B727 was and always will be a great plane. Though my first true love and always will be is the B707. She was a graceful lady on the ground or in the air. I flew in her and repaired the different variants of her. She was always a lady.

Agreed; out of all of them, I cut my teeth on one of them. Great Lady.
