Position and hold -> Line up and wait

The FAA could soon implement a changeover from "position and hold" to "line up and wait," to conform with international phraseology standards, NBAA said this week. If approved later this month, the new terminology could be implemented as soon as this June. It's long overdue, according to NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman (www.avweb.com) Daha Fazlası...

What utter nonsense. First off, it is bogus. Position and hold is in the lexicon of all US pilots. Great that we now conform. Lets go with Euro currency too. I will read back "position and hold, Niner Sierra Sierra" regardless. My small protest. Haven't they got better things to do?

Having never flown overseas...I feel as a U.S. pilot that "Position and Hold" is more logical than "Line up and wait". That being said, KBTR does not issue P&H clearances anymore...

The airplane was invented in the US of A, english is the international language of aviation, and "Position and Hold" means taxi into position(on the runway) and hold for takeoff clearance. Piss on the rest of the world.

GIven the emphasis that has been put on runway incursions in the last few years, I don't think we should be changing terminology for entering the runway, especially to something more vague. In most cases, airplanes already lined up and waiting at the point when you're given a TIPH instruction.

I HAVE BEEN FLYING FOR 27 YEARS AND WHEN I FLY OUT OF ALL TOWERED CONTROLLED AIRFEIDS IT IS NICE WHEN THE WORD TAXI IN POSITION AN HOLD ARE SAID.SO LET US BE THANKFULL THAT OUR FAA WILL LEAVE THIS ALONE FOR NOW .NAVAIR

The phraseology isn't the problem. Everyone understands "Position and Hold". How many runway incursions have occurred where the pilot did NOT understand what "Position and Hold" meant? I bet the number is zero. If the goal is to reduce the number of dangerous situations on the ground, then the focus needs to be on the fact that there are more aircraft than ever before and that in some airports the ground procedures are much more complex than anything the pilots may encounter while in the air. Clearer runway and taxiway configurations, better markings, and improved automation will help exponentially more than a change in what is said. When there are many accidents between automobiles at a stop sign controlled intersection, the common solution is to change it to a stop light controlled intersection. A red light I think is even more universal than a different English phrase.
