Are America's airports going to be great again?

Throughout the campaign, Donald Trump held up America's airports as a symbol of the nation's decay. "You land at LaGuardia, you land at Kennedy, you land at LAX, you land at Newark," Trump said during the first presidential debate. "We've become a third world country." Based on the 2016 global rankings - the US based airlines are third world countries as well. Delta marked the highest at #35 if I recall correctly. Jeez.

The problem is not just airports but the absence of a total transportation strategy. There should be no airline service between LGA and BOS and DCA. This is a job for true High speed rail. Also, LGA needs to be connected to JFK's Air TRain. Trips between NYC and BOS/DCA should be under 2 hours via HSR..this would freeup many slots for airline traffic. Costly? Of course it is. Third World countries don't have the money, but we do. The by-product of the engineering and technology investment is a new, exportable knowledge base that will pay for itself overtime.

Amen Joe,
We're trying to build light rail in Seattle and just approved the second leg of the twenty-five year journey. Can you imagine how long it's going to take to install HPR to Boston?
We're already doing pretty good between NYC and DC but have a long way to go. It won't be done in my lifetime.

Make La Guardia Great Again. If there is one airport that always finds a way to make my day awful. Too many flights not enough runway, taxiway or gate space and it only gets worse when poor WX move in.

I spent most of my life in the NYC metropolitan market. The biggest obstacle about New York is land AND how do you improve an old airport while still keeping it working? It's not easy. Years ago we had to proposal to build a huge airport in the south Jersey pineland or convert McGuire AFB to a commercial airport. Both ideas were lost to national defense or protectionists of the NJ Pine barrens. But unless you want to drive major miles to the NYC airports, you really don't have a chance. They are stuck with fixing up the old facilities at great cost and inconvenience to travelers during construction. With a few exceptions, (think Denver, Dallas, Phoenix), most major cities don't have the room for larger and more modern airports.

Ernst, Phoenix is not an 'exception', being surrounded by urban areas like every other 'downtown' airport. But Phoenix is in the process of becoming the benchmark airport for all others with new terminals replacing old while keeping passenger traffic, installing a light rail system ahead of schedule and on-budget, and doing all of this without needing to push the boundaries of the airport out in any direction. Arizona is a 'red' state, seems all of the anguish about modernizing an airport, running way over schedule and budget, and taking years to complete are all in 'blue' states. Hmm...
