The US just dropped the 'mother of all bombs' on an ISIS target in Afghanistan

eklendi

The US has deployed the largest non-nuclear bomb in its inventory on an ISIS target in a remote part of far northeast Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon. (www.businessinsider.com) Daha Fazlası...

Having something like this in WWII to eliminate Japanese cave complexes would have saved tens of thousands US soldiers' lives and more than that wounded. With their glory in death attitude, the Japanese soldiers were going to die anyway. The Talaban and ISIS are very similar. If they want to be martyrs, grant them their wish and bury them in their booby trapped caves and tunnels and spare the lives of those that would have to go in and root them out. We fight not to die. This bomb saved many more lives than it took.

The RAF had a 22000 lb bomb in WWII, the "Grand Slam". Used effectively on concrete bunkers, viaducts etc. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Slam_%28bomb%29

Very true in total weight but much less in explosive power.

No doubt true.

Its about time someone used this weapon for the purpose it was designed.

Anyone know why they use a C-130 rather than a C-17? It is a speed/maneuverability issue?
tcmarks
Tim Marks 6
So the AC130 Gunship that accompanies the C130 with the MOAB can fly together, looks like a 'normal' pair of cargo planes from the ground.
redmdz
Mike Ziemann 1
Cargo planes fly as singletons way more than they fly in formation. The looks or deception issue has nothing to do with it. It's dropped by an MC-130, a special operations variant of the C-130 whose crews train specifically for unique, niche, missions like this. Aside from the SOLL-II low level mission, C-17s have enough conventional mission taskings to be bogged down training for a mission that is so unique that it has been used just once in 14 years. If the MC-130 is big enough to carry the weapon, then there is no good reason to use a C-17 just because it's even bigger.

I hadn't thought about it that way. Thanks!

For an much slower speed, for accuracy.

hate war... not sure if we should be over there at all... that being said, if we go to fight then we should use every weapon at our disposal to insure quick victory.. no "rules of engagement"..no worries about "collateral damage"
most generals don't want to wage war but when they're called on they know how to win quickly...winning quickly means fewer people die overall... I flew 100 times over enemy held Laos and Vietnam.. I saw the waste of 50,000+ lives and billions upon billions of hard earned American dollars... Johnson and McNamara blew it..Nixon, finally, unleashed the full power of our B52s and the war was over... should have done it in 1965

So, Jim, you are saying that it is 100% perfectly ok for a terrorist group to build up and then attack a target, be it US or othewise? Personally I think we should obliterate them. Period. Oh, BTW, the World Trade Centers taught us PLENTY about terrorists and what they are capable of.

I just looked this up.

The Little Boy atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, exploded with an energy of about 15 kilotons of TNT (63 TJ), and the Fat Man atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, exploded with an energy of about 20 kilotons of TNT (84 TJ).

The AF did this type of bombing in Vietnam, although they used a lot smaller bomb. I think it was a 10k bomb and they rolled it out of a C130 in thick jungle environments.

Flew quite a few Bomb Damage Assessment missions in a Huey over RVN - I loved watching the "Arc Light" (B52's with 2000# Iron Bombs) clear miles of jungle in an instant! Only saw the Daisy Cutter one time - I was flying a BDA about 15 clicks away, honestly I almost wet myself, shock wave bounced that UH-1 around pretty good! About time we started to fight like we mean it. Let's oblige them there martyr prospects

I flew my Huey on 2 of these missions. Made a great LZ. A little dusty. Bad news was the troops had to climb out of a helluva hole. Good news was they never met any enemy resistance.

Wonder if I could use a much, much, much smaller version on my weed infested back yard? The BDA might be a bit much, though.

as much as the us and many other countries would like to "obliterate" isis, this is a difficult proposition as shown in previous years, and the moab is an escalation and a danger to our own military..right now the really serious issue is north korea and the use of nuclear weaponry, which they are threatening..i remember the days of "fallout shelters" and having drills at school where you hid under the desks (not that it would have saved anyone) ..we seem to be going backwards in time!

Proud to be an American and stand up to the scum of the earth who refuse to join the rest of the world morally, yes. If you believe these people are to be defended, then please by all means go and live with them...and be prepared to sacrifice your life to their morals as the western infidel you will condemned as.

Absolutely. Trump has given the military the authority to conduct operations as they should be conducted, not by politicians with their finger in the political wind. Obama conducted a foreign policy of stern talk and finger-wagging followed up with....nothing! There are currently former Obama administration defense and security heads who are now saying, in effect, "it's about time". They feel vindicated by what Trump is now doing because they were ignored by Obama. Obama chose to disregard the advice of his military for eight years which has brought us to this current situation in Syria, North Korea, Iran, ISIS everywhere and a horrendous immigrant/refugee crisis. Those countries and many others saw a profound weakness in Obama and quickly determined he would not do anything because his political standing was more important to him than taking needed action. Yeah, I'm proud of it because we are finally taking the leadership role that is expected of us and is needed.

Very much so. It should've been done years ago and we might not have these world immigration issues. Snowballing or maybe more like sandstorming from middle-east to the west (Europe/USA) and impacting the citizen lives of the host countries.

How brave of you to speak up in this forum of subtle, knowledgeable thinkers, all lined up behind their billionaire bullyboy. We just dropped our biggest conventional weapon on one of the least significant targets, but the biggest effect was to distract our attention from the most significant. That usually works.
bbabis
bbabis 2
Billionaire bullyboy is just liberal speak for successful leader and please enlighten us on your knowledge of targeting. As knowledgable thinkers, we reject innuendoes and baseless accusations in favor of truth and facts of which your statement has neither.

Pride has nothing to do with it. If they had a similar weapon, it would be used against a civilian city and not a military complex. These islamic terrorists have no problem killing innocents by the thousands every chance they get. The MOAB is simply a device to give them fewer chances.
