a great airliner for pilots, airline accountants and paying passengers for many years and millions of revenue miles. Hate to see good friends leave the party too soon.........

I don't know, there was always something reassuring about a salt & pepper haired driver in the front left seat, and a pair of salt & pepper haired JT-8D's out back. Good dog! <tosses a treat>

What an anticlimactic end to such an amazing airplane era...wish it had received a proper send off like Delta did for the L1011 and 747..end of an era of a workhorse in the USA

No more Atlanta “dog pound”....end of an era of DC-9 types flying out of ATL, so sad.

Nostalgia abounds. But as a passenger I always hated flying them. Good riddance, I say.

They are still flying the 717. Was that not a derivative?

The 717 is just another model of the DC-9. -10s -30s, -50s, -80s, -90s. All the same bird. Some differences of course, e.g. length, pax capacity, engines, etc. but all DC-9s. And all of them (and me) growing old.

The 717 had hydraulic spoilers compared to torsion bars, glass cockpits and a much better vacuum toilet system compared to the individual toilet tanks and pumps. All were tight, hard to work on and like all Douglas designed aircraft built like a battleship!

The 717 was a derivative of the DC-9

MD80s, MD90, 717 (was MD95): all derived from DC9

The FAA's DC-9 type certificate data sheet is A6WE. That's the official type designation data. There is no DC-9-95. The official DC-9 list goes from the MD-90-30 to the 717-200. Note also that on the FAA's official type designation data there is no B, DC, or MD in front of 717-200. All that can be found here; https://rgl.faa.gov/.

As an aside when a pilot takes their type rating ride in any DC-9 whether a -10 -90 or the 717 their certificate is amended to read DC-9. See https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/Ac61-89e.pdf.

So sad... Not only is it the end of an era for the Mad Dogs, but I never got a chance to fly on ANY MD-80 variant. This literally makes me so upset I never got that opportunity :(
