One person was rescued by firefighters after a fuel truck crashed into an airplane at LAX’s Terminal 4 late Monday afternoon.

The driver of the truck was trapped and required extrication, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department said in an emailed alert. Firefighters were called to Los Angeles International Airport at 4:18 p.m.

The driver’s right leg was pinned under the steering wheel and fire crews had to use the “jaws of life” to free him, authorities said.

The truck had crashed into the engine of an unoccupied plane, Scott said. The driver was taken to a hospital; his or her condition was not known.

No fuel was leaking, Scott said.

Though an LAX spokeswoman initially said the driver was an American Airlines employee, a spokesman for the airline later confirmed that the driver worked for a third-party contractor.

The aircraft was taken out of service, LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles said. She could not confirm where the plane was headed and referred calls for more information to American Airlines.

KTLA’s Scott Williams contributed to this article.
