Sad tale of the fate of the Phantom(s) in the description. Glad all folks involved were rescued.
But let's not ignore one of the most beautiful combat aircraft of all time, the A-5 Vigilante, in the background. Anyone aware of its fate? Or that of the A-4 Skyhawk in the foreground?

During the Vietnam War, SH-3s rescued the crews of downed aircraft at sea and over land.
How often did they get Thanked for their service back then?

Nice pic!

This is an outstanding photo with a great informational historical account.

Wow! 62 years of loving aircraft but until now had never even heard of an A-5! Very cool!

The Navy developed 2 Heavy Attack (VAH) carrier based aircraft capable of delivering nuclear payloads during the early years of the Cold War. The North American A5 "Vigie" was meant to replace the McDonnell Douglas A3 Skywarrior in this role. Due to it's Mach 2 capability the Navy felt it would be more useful as a Recon/Photo bird, thus the RVAH designation. Satellites probably sent most of these photo reconnaissance birds (RF-4s, RF-8ss)including the RVAH-5 to the boneyard. The A-3 Skywarrior outlasted them all for twenty years as Electronics Warfare squadrons (VAQ) and as tankers (VAK)

F-4B 153017 (MODEX NH-107) was attached to VF-213 "Black Lions" at this time.
Aircraft was upgraded to F-4N, and was SOC Oct 13, 1983. Salvaged at NAS North
Island, California in 1984.
RA-5C 147858 (NH-601) was with RVAH-13 "Bats" for this cruise. In the 1962-1963
time frame, this aircraft spent one year at NASA Dryden (side number 858) in
support of supersonic transport program. as 858. Aircraft was written off at
NAS Albany, GA in Dec 1971.
A-4C NH-310 is with VA-144 "Roadrunners". I could not easily find any additional
info on this particular aircraft.

Robert Day: Every time they pulled one out. Naval Aviation is a family, not a hostile home front. You bet we thanked them.

We had Vigie's and Phantoms on the Nimitz from Carrier Wing 8 back in 76 during our pre-deployment shakedown when Nimitz was brand new. Got F-14's next when the Phontoms and Vigie's were phased out in 77. Crazy Navy days! The Vigi shook the blast barrier it was so powerfull, as did the Phantom. Nice picture of the Kitty Hawk's deck (November Hotel) and the H-3 in Rescue Camo. Yes that is an A-4 "scooter" (Skyhawk)in the forground.... Bravo Zulu to the mission....> might have some pics of the Vigie on the Uncle Chester to post sometime - thanks!
