What a shot! In the back are a Comet, a 707, a Constellation etc.

Looks like a coast guard C-123 and a Bristol Britannia as well back there too

Great photo. At the time these pics may seem meaningless but 50 yrs later they are precious.

My first airline flight in a Trans Canada Airlines Viscount

Great shot! Thanks for sharing.

My first flight (in 1957) was in a BEA Viscount.

Don't see the Connie but the two far back birds look like Britannia's. Yes, it's CG aircraft. What it was doing at Gatwick I have no idea. These Viscounts were great. I flew on these when I was in Hawaii in 69 or 70. I think it was Hawaiian Airlines. Loved those big windows. What a view!!

Looks like the 707 tail indicates British Caledonia Airlines. Worked in Libya in the late 70s and early 80s. Used to fly out of Tripoli on BCA to Gatwick on their 727s. Mostly oilfield workers on leave. BCA knew how to cater to the needs of their clientele, as the smallest bottles on the drink cart were 750 ml.

I think one of those Britannias back there might actually be a Canadian Armed Forces CC-106 Yukon, the Canadair-built derivative of the Britannia. You can just about make out the maple leaf roundell between the cockpit and the open door, and the Canadian flag on the tail. The CAF/RCAF used to fly them regularly between Gatwick and Canada. I remember that bumpy 11 hour flight at 25,000 feet all too well.

Correction. It was probably BAC 111s and not 727s. I had to fly Libyan Arab Air 727 to get to Tripoli.

At Gatwick! With a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft in the background. Anyone know what it is?
sam kuminecz
