Embraer 170/175 (N207AN)

This pic was clicked yesterday (21 Mar 2017). N207AN returned to RNO today making the same LAX-RNO run as it did yesterday, but the skies over Reno were just as cloudy today as they were yesterday, so I did not bother going back to try for a "sunshine shot" of this one.

There are five such letters in the Reno area: the "R" seen here; an "S" for the City of Sparks which is adjacent to Reno (see my photo of C-FYJG; it is in the background); and also an "N" (just barely out of this picture off the right side ... it can be seen in various other pics) which stands for the University of Nevada - Reno (UNR). The "N" has actually been there on Peavine Mountain for around 100 years. It gets "refreshed" every year by UNR students.
South of Reno, there is a "D" for Damonte Ranch and a "G" for Galena (visible in the background of my picture of helicopter N109LN). Both of those areas are residential and the letters were constructed by the high school students in those areas.
Putting large white letters on the sides of mountains in pretty common in Nevada. They can be seen all around the state.

Nice shot, Gary! And having letters (usually colored rocks) on a mountain (or hill) side is pretty common throughout the western US. (I don't know if the practice extends into the mid-west or eastern US.) Like Gary said, they usually represent the name of the town or a local school. For example, there is a large red, white and blue "A" on a hill side in Tucson, Arizona representing the University of Arizona which is located there. The hill is referred to locally as "A Mountain."
