Airbus A330-200 (VP-CBE)
Forced to make an instrument approach to the airport due to the thick, heavy smoke covering the Truckee Meadows coming from three terrible wildfires (the Carr Fire at Redding, CA; the Whaleback Fire at Susanville, CA; and the Perry Fire at Pyramid Lake, NV, just north of Reno), HKJ's all-white VP-CBE (an A330-2xx) touches down on Reno-Tahoe International's 16R at 2:45 in the afternoon. The air temperature was 104 degrees as this unmarked Hongkong Jet (HKJ) Airbus was arriving from Hawaii.
The huge jet carried less than two dozen passengers. Must be nice to have enough $$ to charter a jet like this for 20 or so folks. It will be in Reno for 10 or 11 days.

This click was taken on Saturday afternoon (July 28, 2018). Twenty-fours hours later, (yesterday, 7/29), the wildfire smoke was even thicker. Residents were being warned to stay inside if possible, arrivals AND departures were on instruments, and airport ramp agents suffered eye irritation and difficulty breathing due to smoke inhalation. (And one photog was out there for several hours, too, until he finally became ill, called it a day, and went home. However, he DID get some awesome photos, AND a tour, of water-scooping fire tanker aircraft. Hey, a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. lol)

Hi, Isaac, and TY for the photo compli. I actually had to edit this a bit (not a lot because I don't really know how beyond basic editing). The original is all hazy smoke, so I tried to filter it by editing to make it more distinct. And also, the air temp was 104, and out there it was probably even hotter, so the shot is a bit heat-warped. I was out on the ramp but I made no attempt to get positioned near the runways -- the inbounds were on instrument approaches and visibility was lousy even on the grounds so I knew I would just be an unacceptable distraction if I was out there. So I could not get closer and just had to deal with the heat waves. Our area is not under any danger from actual fire; that nightmare is being experienced by Californians to the north and west of Reno. All we have to cope with is the smoke and the "ashfall." Gray ashes are falling from the smoke clouds like snow. Reno is in a sort of valley on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, so when the smoke moves over the mountains and settles in, it just stays there if there is no wind. Usually, we hope for wind to push it away, but right now, any winds at all will just make the fires in CA spread so we are all hoping the air stays dead calm. Once again, TY for the comp about the pic. Now that I'm home for a couple days, I'll be able to catch up on your recent posts. (Wave)
