FAIRCHILD HILLER FH-227 (N7801M) - This scan of a very, VERY old Kodak 620 film picture (the first of a two picture set) shows a Mohawk Airlines Fairchild Hiller FH-227 propjet (N7801M), named "Albany," as it is just beginning to taxi away from Gate 11 at Greater Buffalo International (now Buffalo Niagara International ... KBUF)br /I did a bit of restorative editing on this photo. Both this picture and the second companion photo are severely yellowed with age (they were taken in the last few months of 1968 which makes them around 47-48 years old). I almost decided to take the easier route and to convert them to black and white, but if I had done that the gold-and-black MOH livery paint would not be viewable ... and Mohawks livery was, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful of the era.br /NOTE: The actual AIRCRAFT TYPE of this a/c is "FH-227." However, because a maximum of four letters / numbers are accepted in FAs AIRCRAFT TYPE data box, only the "FH22" is shown under this picture.

This picture and its companion have been previously posted on the web. A gentleman named Larry Myers created a website devoted to Mohawk and he used both pictures on his site with my permission. As of a few months ago, they were still viewable on Larry's site; however, neither of those photos had been "color restored" as this one has been. I'll post the second picture tomorrow. It is focused on the back portion of this same aircraft ... and the wonderful gold-and-black Indian head logo on the tail. As everyone already knows, Mohawk Airlines was bought out by Allegheny, which (thru other acquisitions and mergers) eventually became US Air, then US Airways, and now American. And today, American Airlines has several "heritage" livery schemebirds in its current fleet; including Piedmont, PSA, Allegheny, Reno Air, and America West paints. In reality, there should also be a Mohawk Airlines heritage paint, but sadly, the MOH livery seen above will never appear in the skies again. :-(

TYVM, Mark. The second one (which I am posting right now because I am off to do a photo shoot at an airport event this morning) shows the Mohawk tail fairly well. I think the old MOH colors (gold and black) were so cool! I really wish there could be a heritage bird with the Mohawk livery but events back in the 70s forever doomed any chance of that.

Gotta love this Mohawk 227...This was serial number 503 and it currently sits on the Tehran International Airport in Iran, minus engines.

Notice To All: Some jerk is actually offering this photograph for sale on the web. (I've got the name and site and I am following up. The person got this photo from this FA gallery.) The bozo is offering it for over $55.00 . Although I absolutely cannot believe for even an instant that anyone would pay such a ridiculous sum for an "approximately 11x14" print of this picture of mine, I suppose it is possible that the thief would offer to reduce the price. So, just in case there really is someone out there who does desire a copy of this (OR any other of my Mohawk Airlines photos here on FA), just send an email to [email protected] and I'll send you a digital copy and you can print it at any Walgreens Pharmacy or FedEx store in any reasonable size for about 3 dollars. Don't let this clown rip you off by selling you a picture you can get for free. (gcs)

Go Gary! Fabulous shot of the nicely stretched FH-227, as compared to an F27!
