Copter Chases Pilot Wandering Over NYC
"I don't know what he's doing – he's going everywhere," gasped an air controller as he radioed passenger jets to tell them to steer clear of an "unknown aircraft." Sounds screwed up. Not sure who flies 747s from Atlanta to JFK. From Martinsburg WV to get to the coast entails numerous Class B and Class C airspace encounters. Did nobody else see him? Sounds like an excited reporter who was not in possesion of all of the facts
I would LOVE to hear the tapes on this one. I bet those controllers were having a lovely day!
I occasionally fly a Champ with no electic and no radio from Pennsylvania to Cape Cod, a trip that takes me close to NYC airspace. It can be done by studying the NY airspace and planning your course carefully. I usually fly beneath the controlled airspace to Raritan Bay, then NE across lower NY bay to Coney Island, and then continuing E along the southern shore of Long Island, thereby flying out from under the controlled airspace. Proceeding NE from there the navigation is pretty easy, keep the big water to your right and the land to your left. It can be done, and safely too!
It really happened, I had to hold over the northport stacks for 20 min for this dope. I was listening to republic tower who seemed quite suprises that the plane and copter were landing there. I am sure the pilot was in big trouble, they had the copter land next to him. I want my $100 in fuel back.!
Just sad. If you're going to go anywhere near class B, no what the heck you're doing!! This just makes GA look bad bad bad.
I bet he is going to buy a gps this week!
